Dr. Van Horne graduated from UBC with honour and the Canadian dental Association president’s award for outstanding patient care. She went on to do a year of advanced dentistry as a resident at the Vancouver General Hospital and Saint Paul’s Hospital working on medically compromised patients and learning how to do IV sedation.

She has also volunteered in rural villages in Guatemala, India and the North of Ireland. She spent the last 15 years providing loving care to all her patients in rural Alberta; providing a vast array of treatments from IV sedation, wisdom teeth removal, implants, botox, to endodontics and orthodontics . Since graduating dental school Dr.Van Horne has always put patient care with compassion and patient education as a priority. Now that she is here in Edmonton Dr.Van Horne looks forward to providing comprehensive treatment to her patients with the small town personalized care that created a loyal following of patients over that last 15 years.

Dr. Van Horne is happily married with one son, she loves the outdoors, travel and volunteering.

How does root canal treatment work?

The root canals are spaces inside each of your teeth. They contain the pulp, which is a bundle of soft tissue and nerves. If the tooth is injured, the pulp could become infected. It’s important to treat the infection quickly because it can spread from the tooth to the surrounding tissues. During root canal treatment, the pulp and infected tissue is removed to prevent further infection. Once the root canal is complete, we clean and seal the tooth to protect it. Finally, we restore the tooth with a dental crown.

Aren’t root canals painful?

Root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful, but with modern anesthetics and techniques the procedure is normally no more painful than getting a tooth filled.

Dr. Muwanguzi graduated from the School of Dental Medicine at Boston University in 2017. She continued her education in 2018 at the Marquette University School of Dentistry, where she completed an Advanced Education in General Dental Residency. Dr. Muwanguzi is an enthusiastic learner and enjoys applying what she has learned to caring for and educating her patients. She believes in providing individual patient care while providing comprehensive dental treatment.

Dr. Muwanguzi has had the pleasure of completing two dental mission trips in Uganda and Panama to provide dental care, and she plans to go on other missions in the future.

Dr. Muwanguzi is married to Richard, her better half, and they have two beautiful children together. When she’s not treating patients, she enjoys travelling, playing basketball, getting involved in her community, and spending time with family and friends.

Dr. AJ relocated from the Gold Coast, Australia where he had been working as a dentist for 5 years. His passion for snowboarding and other winter activities inspired his move to Canada. Dr. AJ also has a particular interest in root canals and enjoys the artistic side of performing dentistry that imitates nature.

Dr. Alec was born in Bobruisk, Belarus. He attended Bobruisk Medical College and served in the Belarusian Military Forces. After his graduation in 1998, he was admitted to the Faculty of Dentistry at the Belarusian State Medical University, where he graduated in 2003. He went on to complete a 1-year residency in Lida’s District Dental Clinic and continued to work there as a general dentist. In 2007, he graduated from the Belarusian Medical Academy of Secondary Education as a Doctor of Dental Surgery and began to work as a dental surgeon in the District Hospital alongside his clinical work.

Dr. Alec immigrated to Canada in 2009. He worked as a dental assistant before obtaining his Permit for General Practice from the National Dental Examining Board of Canada in 2016. He has practised at Spearmint Dental since then.

In addition to practicing at Spearmint Dental, Dr. Alec is also a clinical instructor at the Braden Centre for Skilled and Internationally Trained Professionals and a member of the Canadian and Belarusian Dental Associations. He has a particular interest in restorative dentistry, crowns and bridges, dentures, root canal therapy, and dental surgery. He’s fluent in English and Russian.

Dr. Alec is married to his wife, Olga, and they have one daughter, Margarita. He enjoys spending time with his family, mountain biking, fishing, gardening and making beer and bread.

Remove the stress from your dental visit with IV sedation. We provide several levels of sedation to suit your personal needs. Please note that IV and oral sedatives will leave you impaired and legally unable to drive so you will need to arrange transportation home from our office.

IV Sedation

IV, or intravenous sedation, lets you be completely sedated during your procedure. The sedative produces a deep level of relaxation. You’ll stay calm and relaxed, and you won’t be aware of or remember your treatment.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation produces a moderate level of relaxation that wears off quickly after your appointment. You may be aware of your surroundings, but you will remain calm during your treatment.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a common dental sedative. It produces a mild, euphoric level of sedation and it wears off very quickly after your treatment. You will be able to drive after nitrous sedation.

Dr. Kern graduated from the University of Alberta in 1994 and went into private practice afterwards. He has made many trips overseas to provide dental care to underprivileged people in developing countries. Dr. Kern practices all aspects of dentistry and he especially enjoys working with children. His clinical focuses include orthodontics, dental implants, and root canal treatment. He is currently working as the team dentist for the Edmonton Oilers.

Dr. Kern is married to his lovely wife Patti. They have three children: Jacob, Kendra, and Cameron. An avid sports enthusiast, he loves playing and coaching sports and especially loves coaching his children.
